In today's business landscape, growth is often measured by market share, revenue, and expansion. For Tractor Beverage Company, success has always been measured a little differently.

Founded by Griffin Barkley and Justin Schneir, Tractor was built on the belief that businesses can be both profitable and purposeful. More than a decade after launching the nation's first certified organic beverage company for foodservice, that philosophy remains central to every decision the company makes.

What started as a mission to bring cleaner beverages to restaurant fountains has evolved into something much larger: a company dedicated to supporting farmers, improving agricultural practices, empowering employees, and proving that businesses can scale without losing sight of their values.

At the heart of that vision is a guiding principle known internally as "Founder's Intent."

While many companies create mission statements that eventually fade into the background, Tractor has developed Founder's Intent into a living framework that shapes everything from partnerships and hiring decisions to product development and long-term strategy. It serves as a constant reminder that growth should never come at the expense of people, purpose, or impact.

The philosophy is rooted in ideas the founders often describe as "Business as Unusual" and the connection between "soil and soul," recognizing that healthy businesses and healthy communities are built on the same foundation: care, stewardship, and long-term thinking.

Simply put, Tractor believes you don't have to choose between building something big and building something good.

Building a Better Beverage Company

Before entering the beverage industry, both founders worked in insurance, where they spent years observing business owners across countless industries. Those experiences provided valuable lessons about leadership, company culture, and the kind of organization they hoped to build one day.

For Barkley, whose work focused heavily on agricultural insurance, the experience was especially influential. Spending time alongside growers, farmers, and produce shippers gave him a firsthand understanding of the challenges facing modern agriculture.

He witnessed the realities of farming, the risks farmers take every season, and the importance of creating systems that support their long-term success.

Those experiences ultimately inspired Tractor's commitment to organic agriculture.

From the beginning, the founders made a conscious decision to build the company around certified organic ingredients. They viewed organic not simply as a label, but as a commitment to farming practices that support healthier soil, reduce synthetic inputs, and help create a more sustainable future for agriculture.

That decision wasn't always the easiest path.

Creating beverages without artificial preservatives required years of research and reformulation. Convincing restaurant operators that organic beverages could perform in high-volume environments presented another challenge. At the time, many consumers still associated healthier products with compromised flavor.

Tractor set out to prove otherwise.

More Than a Product

As the company grew, so did its vision.

The founders never viewed Tractor as merely a beverage manufacturer. Instead, they saw an opportunity to build a platform capable of creating positive change throughout the food system.

Today, every beverage served represents more than refreshment. It supports a broader mission focused on increasing demand for organic agriculture, strengthening farming communities, and encouraging consumers to think differently about where their food comes from.

Through initiatives such as the Farmhand Foundation and various sustainability programs, Tractor continues to explore ways to support farmers while driving meaningful conversations about the future of agriculture.

The company's transparency efforts have also become a defining part of its identity. Rather than reacting to consumer demand for accountability, Tractor built transparency into its foundation from the beginning.

As consumers have become increasingly ingredient-conscious, authenticity has helped the company build trust and establish a loyal following among both restaurant partners and customers.

Protecting Purpose While Growing

Perhaps one of the most impressive aspects of Tractor's journey is its commitment to preserving its culture as the company expands.

Many brands struggle to maintain authenticity as they scale. Tractor has approached growth differently.

The leadership team regularly revisits the company's founding principles, ensuring decisions align with the values that inspired the business from the start. Founder's Intent serves as a compass, helping guide the organization through opportunities and challenges alike.

The approach reflects a belief that growth should enhance a company's purpose rather than dilute it.

That mindset has helped Tractor evolve from a startup challenging industry norms into a nationally recognized brand that continues to influence conversations around food, farming, and sustainability.

Looking Toward the Future

As Tractor enters its next chapter, the founders remain optimistic about the opportunity ahead.

Beyond expanding into retail and reaching more households, they hope the company can contribute to a larger cultural shift toward healthier food systems, cleaner ingredients, and stronger connections between consumers and agriculture.

Just as importantly, they hope Tractor continues to create opportunities for the people who help build the company every day. The business has embraced employee ownership, ensuring team members share in the success they help create.

For Barkley and Schneir, that commitment reflects what Tractor has always been about.

The company's legacy won't be measured solely by the beverages it sells or the markets it enters. It will be measured by the impact it creates, the communities it supports, and the values it refuses to leave behind.

In an era when many businesses are chasing growth at all costs, Tractor Beverage Company offers a refreshing reminder that success and purpose need not be mutually exclusive.

Sometimes, the most meaningful growth begins from the ground up.
