Every celebrity has a red-carpet moment, but few shine without the magic of someone like Emma Willis working just beyond the spotlight. As one of the most in-demand celebrity hair and makeup artists today, Emma is the calm in the chaos, the creativity behind the curtain, and the pulse of glam on some of the world’s biggest stages. But to understand the magic, you must know the woman behind the brush.

Her career began, as many great ones do, with a bold move and a little white lie. “I was 12 and technically too young to work, but I walked into the local salon and pitched myself hard,” she recalls, laughing. “I told them I’d sweep floors, clean skirting boards, and make the best tea in town. I got hired on the spot and stayed there until I was 18.”

That early job sparked a love for beauty and a passion for people. Emma dabbled in acting and modeling, but she was always drawn to what was happening just off-camera. After studying at the London College of Fashion and earning a diploma in makeup and hair for film and TV, she hit the ground running. She assisted some of the top artists in the UK, including Maggie Hunt and Corinne Lucy-Howlett, and soon found herself working alongside iconic British photographer Cambridge Jones. That network, combined with her talent and tenacity, landed Emma her first major gig as working with a big personality and British celebrity who after working with her once brought her on as her personal hair and makeup artist on the BBC show Beat the Boss. That experience marked a turning point, and Emma hasn’t looked back since.

Her career now includes red carpets, press tours, and private clients, all sprinkled with travel and unforgettable memories. “Working with celebrities and influencers is always full of adventure,” she says. “I’ve been so lucky to work with talent who have stayed loyal to me for years. Because of that, I’ve had incredible experiences all over the world, and when I can, I bring my family along.” That includes her husband, whom she’s been with since childhood, and their two daughters, KoKo Raine and Milo Grae.

That brings us to what Emma calls her proudest moment to date: being on set as the personal hair and makeup artist for her daughter KoKo, who recently landed a lead role in a feature film. “It was her first acting job ever, and I got to be by her side the entire time,” Emma shares. “It was emotional, magical, and full circle in the most beautiful way. A career milestone, yes, but more than that, a memory I’ll cherish forever.”

In an industry known for high stakes and even higher speed, Emma stays grounded through family, perspective, and the values she grew up with. Work hard, be kind, have manners, don’t forget where you came from. Her upbringing taught her that success means nothing if you lose yourself along the way.

Despite her long list of accomplishments, Emma remains refreshingly humble. Compliments make her squirm. “I’d rather have constructive criticism,” she admits. “That I can work with. I’m my own worst critic and always think I can do better.”

What Emma loves most isn’t the spotlight. It’s everything that leads up to it. The early mornings, the long days on set, the red-eye flights to New York to do press for a client, then catching another red-eye just to be home in time for morning family snuggles. That’s where her heart is. “The energy and the fast pace of it all, I truly feel like I was built for this business,” she says. “I don’t ever get tired of any of it.” For Emma, the real magic lives in the “adventure and journey of the BTS,” in the moments that are the “in-be-tween that so many don’t see, but we live every minute of the day.” From 4 a.m. call times to chats in the chair that spark new opportunities, Emma’s world is filled with the kind of moments that don’t always make it to camera but often mean the most. “After all,” she says, “it’s all about the journey, the people you meet, the connections you make, and the art you create. It’s not always about the destination. Although, if you’re lucky enough, sometimes the destinations can be pretty darn magical too.”

With her heart firmly in the craft and her feet planted in purpose, Emma Willis continues to prove that the real power lies not in the spotlight, but in the hands that shape it.
