Three Islands, One Unforgettable Summer: A Luxury Journey Through Greece

There is something undeniably magical about setting off for the Greek Islands with the people you love most. This summer, my husband, my 17-year-old stepdaughter, and I embarked on an unforgettable three-island adventure that took us from the dramatic caldera cliffs of Santorini to the untouched beauty of Ios, ending on the sun-drenched shores of Crete. Each island revealed its own distinct personality, rhythm, and charm. More impressively, each destination delighted all three of us equally, proving that the perfect family vacation can be both luxurious and deeply personal.

Santorini: Sunsets, Suites, and Seaside Sophistication at Andronis Arcadia

There is no gentle introduction to Santorini. As you round the winding cliffside roads into Oia, the breathtaking caldera suddenly unfolds before you. Brilliant blue waters stretch endlessly below towering cliffs dotted with whitewashed homes, cascading bougainvillea, and infinity pools that seem to disappear into the Aegean Sea. It is one of those rare places that exceeds every expectation and reminds you why Greece remains one of the world's most coveted destinations.

After a scenic 30-minute drive from the port, we arrived at Andronis Arcadia, perfectly situated on the quieter edge of Oia. Just a short ten-minute stroll from the bustling village center, the location offered the best of both worlds. We enjoyed easy access to Oia's famous boutiques, cafés, and restaurants while returning each evening to a peaceful sanctuary away from the crowds. Unlike many boutique hotels on the island, Andronis Arcadia offers an expansive collection of more than 100 suites and villas, creating a spacious atmosphere without sacrificing intimacy.

Our suite featured a private pool and a generous terrace perfectly positioned to capture Santorini's legendary sunsets. Inside, the design embraced refined Cycladic elegance with handcrafted furnishings, warm natural textures, and clean architectural lines, creating an atmosphere of understated luxury. Rather than feeling overly formal, the suite felt welcoming and effortlessly comfortable.

The crown jewel of the resort is undoubtedly the Grande Pool, arguably one of the most photogenic pools on the island. It quickly became our afternoon retreat, complete with private cabanas, a lively swim-up bar, and panoramic sea views. My stepdaughter was instantly captivated, snapping countless photos to share with friends back home. As the afternoon faded into evening, we lingered poolside, overlooking Pacman Sunset Restaurant, while a local DJ created the perfect soundtrack.

Dining throughout the property was exceptional. Both restaurants beautifully celebrated Mediterranean flavors with contemporary flair. Breakfast quickly became one of our favorite rituals, especially the unforgettable truffle soft eggs served over perfectly toasted sourdough.

As spectacular as Andronis Arcadia is, I could never spend an entire trip within the walls of even the most beautiful resort. Santorini is meant to be explored, and every winding pathway seems to reveal another unforgettable view.

One evening we made our way down to Ammoudi Bay, descending the famous stone staircase that leads to the picturesque fishing harbor tucked beneath Oia's towering cliffs. The setting is nothing short of magical. Fishing boats gently sway in the harbor while waterfront tavernas line the shoreline against the backdrop of dramatic red volcanic cliffs.

As the sun slowly disappeared into the horizon, the sky transformed into brilliant shades of gold, pink, and deep orange. We enjoyed dinner at several local favorites during our stay, each offering incredibly fresh seafood delivered directly from the morning's catch. Sunset by Paraskevas lived up to every bit of its reputation. The lobster spaghetti remains one of the most memorable meals of our entire trip. We also loved Ammoudi Fish Tavern and Dimitris Ammoudi Taverna, where warm hospitality made us feel more like welcomed guests than visitors. If you visit during the summer months, reservations are highly recommended.

Beyond Oia, we spent our days browsing charming boutiques, relaxing at cliffside cafés, and enjoying a sunset catamaran cruise around the caldera arranged by the hotel. Seeing Santorini from the water offered an entirely different perspective before returning to our terrace for yet another unforgettable sunset.

Ios: Art, Serenity, and the Vision Behind Calilo

From Santorini, we boarded another ferry bound for Ios, an island that has quietly transformed from its backpacking reputation into one of Greece's most exclusive destinations.

Our home was Calilo, the now-legendary boutique resort nestled within more than 1,000 protected acres, overlooking six miles of pristine coastline and the golden sands of Papas Beach.

Like many travelers, I had admired Calilo countless times on social media, saving image after image for years. Yet nothing prepared me for seeing it in person.

From the moment we arrived, we understood why the resort has become one of Greece's most talked-about destinations.

What makes Calilo truly extraordinary is not simply its remarkable architecture or breathtaking setting. It is the feeling the resort creates. Every pathway, sculpture, mosaic, and suite reflects one Greek family's passion for preserving the island while creating a sanctuary where guests can slow down, reconnect, and simply breathe. The service was equally unforgettable. Every member of the staff anticipated our needs with genuine warmth and authenticity. It was hospitality at its finest, setting a new standard that I know I will compare future luxury resorts against for years to come.

Crete: Coastal Luxury and Timeless Charm at Domes Zeen

Our final stop was Crete, where Domes Zeen Chania introduced us to an entirely different side of Greece.

Perched above a secluded beach just outside Chania, the resort is thoughtfully designed to resemble a traditional Greek village. Beautiful bungalows and villas surround a central gathering space inspired by the ancient agora, encouraging guests to slow down, connect, and embrace the relaxed rhythm of island life.

This was the most effortless and carefree portion of our journey. Domes Zeen combines barefoot luxury with refined design through warm earthy tones, natural woods, woven textures, and beautiful straw palapas that instantly transport you into vacation mode.

There was something unforgettable about sitting beneath those palapas with a chilled glass of local wine while listening to the resort's barefoot saxophonist perform as the sun set over the Mediterranean. It embodied everything a Mediterranean escape should be. Relaxed yet sophisticated, effortlessly stylish, and completely unhurried. It was the kind of place that reminded us how wonderful it feels to simply slow down.

The Beach House restaurant quickly became our family's favorite gathering place for both lunch and dinner. The open-air setting showcased the rich flavors of Crete, and surprisingly, the chicken tacos became one of my favorite dishes of the entire trip.

Just minutes from the resort lies Old Town Chania, one of the most captivating places we visited during our journey. Venetian architecture, Ottoman influences, charming alleyways, and centuries of history come together to create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else in Greece.

We wandered along the historic harbor at golden hour, browsed artisan boutiques tucked into narrow cobblestone streets, explored local markets, and eventually found ourselves enjoying an unforgettable waterfront dinner we had never planned. Sometimes the best travel moments are the ones that happen completely by chance.

Chania also serves as an ideal gateway to exploring western Crete. Although we did not have enough time to hike the famous Samaria Gorge, we did embark on a boat excursion to Balos Lagoon and Gramvousa Island. Crystal clear turquoise waters, soft white sand, and the remains of a centuries-old pirate fortress created one of the most spectacular landscapes of our trip.

My stepdaughter declared Balos her favorite beach of our entire Greek adventure, and after experiencing Santorini and Ios, that is saying something.

A Journey Worth Taking

Greece has a remarkable way of making time feel slower. Whether watching the sun disappear into the caldera in Santorini, discovering the artistic serenity of Calilo in Ios, or wandering the centuries-old streets of Chania, every destination offered something entirely different while sharing the same unmistakable warmth and hospitality.

Three islands. Three unforgettable experiences. One journey that reminded us the greatest luxury is not simply where you stay, but the memories you create together.
