If you are anything like me, you are burnt out on the typical travel destinations that are widely promoted as the “go-to” places. I am always on the hunt for somewhere new and unique that evokes a sense of WOW. That place

looks amazing! "How did I not know about this place sooner?”

Yes, we have all heard of Mexican travel destinations such as Cabo San Lucas and Cancun. I am sure most of you have even booked a Spring Break or family vacation to one of these or other popular locations in Mexico. But I will bet most

of you have never heard of Holbox, Mexico (pronounced “Holbosch”).

Holbox is a hidden gem located off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, just a few hours from the Cancun airport, and then a ferry boat to the island. This undiscovered island paradise offers a unique blend of pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and a laid-back vibe that sets it apart from other tourist hotspots in Mexico. One of the most striking features of Holbox is its wide, stunning beaches, which stretch for miles along the island’s coastline. The powdery white sand, lapped by the gentle waves of the Caribbean turquoise Sea, creates a picture-perfect setting that most people only see in magazines or better yet on their Instagram feeds.

When I discovered Holbox two years ago, it quickly became one of my favorite destinations. From the moment you step off the ferry onto the car-free island, you feel as if you have been transported to paradise. It was like no other part of Mexico I had ever been. All-terrain vehicles serve as taxis waiting to bring you to your hotel. Upon arrival, you can sense the island’s vibe, observing couples cruising around on beach bikes, hearing sounds of reggae from the nearby beach bars, and smelling taco meat filling the air. I kept asking myself why I had never heard of this place before. I almost feel a little guilty about sharing this secret with the world, because it is a true hidden gem and unique place.

In addition to its natural beauty, Holbox has a vibrant culinary scene that visitors should not miss. The town is home to a variety of restaurants serving fresh seafood, traditional Mexican dishes, and international cuisine. A must-visit restaurant in Holbox is Mandarina, located in one of the most popular hotels, Casa Las Tortugas. You’ll enjoy delicious ceviche, grilled meats, and seafood tacos. The vibes are always high with nightly DJ’s, fire pits, and my favorite, an open-flame kitchen.

Luuma is another favorite, and it is known for its farm-to-table, eco-friendly concept and creative dishes. Luuma is most definitely a hot spot in town, thanks to social media. Not only is the food great, but every corner of the restaurant is picture-worthy or, as the Gen Z’s would say, “Instagrammable.”

Then we have Roots, probably the most talked about restaurant on the island. Why, you may ask? Well, they became famous for putting lobster on their pizza. Yes, you read that correctly. Don’t tell my father the lobstermen that. He’d probably have a heart attack. Be prepared to wait because there is always a line.

But if you are looking for something a bit more low-key and authentic, then the beachside paella is an absolute must. No, it is not at a sit-down restaurant or a food truck for that matter. It’s just a local man set up on the sand with a few buckets placed around as chairs for your dining experience. Don’t let the lack of ambiance scare you; not only will it be the best paella you’ll ever have put in your mouth, but it’ll also be a story to share when you return home.

Now, let’s talk hotels...

There are two main areas on the island, and honestly, you can’t go wrong in either area you stay in, but if you’re looking for more of a relaxing vacation, then you’ll want to stay on the Northern side, where you’ll find some of my favorite hotels. Mosquito Beach is also located here. Do yourself a favor: open Google on your computer right now and search “Mosquito Beach Holbox.” You're welcome! If you have not already thought about packing your bags for Holbox, Google search may do the trick. Check the 9de before making the trek, or you will end up carrying everything like my hubby and I. And by things, I mean his bag of beer and my camera gear above our heads, so they didn’t get wet.

The Flamingo Hotel is best known for its famous round pool that looks as if it’s blended in with the turquoise sea in the distance. It features comfortable and stylish accommodations, with spacious rooms and suites designed to provide a peaceful sanctuary for travelers. Guests can unwind and soak up the laid-back

island vibes while enjoying modern amenities and personalized service. The design of this hotel alone is worth a visit. We enjoyed it so much that we extended our stay, and we were so happy we did because it was incredible.

My other favorite hotel for this side of the island is Ser Casasandra. This is luxe, this is boho, this is chic – everything one. Truly, this hotel screams White Lotus season 4. If the price tag is a bit too high, make sure you at least head to their beach bar, Mojito which is across from the hotel. Great cocktails, lunch to die for, and amazing people watching if you ask me. If you are lucky, you will

have the famous mango man pass by while singing here. That’s a good Google search, too if you have time. Does he have a name? Sure. But everyone on the island calls him the Mango Man. Ensure you always keep a couple of pesos in your pocket if he crosses your path. Ask for it loaded with everything.

Now, let’s move over to the Southern area of the Island...

If you have social media and love travel, then I am sure you have heard of the Nomade. The Nomade seamlessly blends luxury with bohemian charm, offering a one-of-a-kind experience for travelers seeking a tranquil escape. What sets Nomade apart is its holistic approach to hospitality, providing guests with a

sanctuary for mind, body, and soul through yoga classes, wellness workshops, and healing therapies. Personally, I would opt for a treehouse stay. Talk about some breathtaking views for your morning coffee.

Whether you are looking for a luxury hotel with five-star dining or a budget-friendly beachside bungalow, Holbox has it all.

Overall, Holbox is a hidden paradise that offers a unique blend of natural beauty, delicious cuisine, and a relaxed atmosphere. If you are looking to unwind on a beach, explore the island's natural wonders, or indulge in delicious local food, Holbox has something for everyone. It is genuinely a destination that should not be

missed for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path island experience in Mexico.
